The Caribbean Sea and the Islands situated in the Caribbean plate are together termed as the Caribbean region. When Christopher Columbus landed there for the first time, he believed that he landed in Asia (Indies). Hence the group of islands comes to be known as West Indies world wide. The Caribbean region is located to the south east of Northern America, east to Central America and also to the north of South America. The inhabitants are mainly the descendents of Africans. The climate in general is tropical, but varies in different locations. Hurricanes are common in West Indies. Regionalism is prospering and economy is recently down in the region.
