GYN is an abbreviation for obstetrician/gynecologist who screens for certain diseases and treat female reproductive health issues and a specialist responsible for helping women to have healthy pregnancies. Obstetrics is usually practiced in conjunction with gynecology, focusing on disorders and diseases of the female reproductive system some of which includes primary and preventive care, pregnancy and delivery, menopause and medical or surgical management with highly specialized procedures such as C-sections & hysterectomies, colposcopy and leep. General gynecologic problems include abnormal bleeding, chronic pelvic pain, uterine fibroid, endometriosis, loss of bladder control, pelvic floor disorders, problems with pelvic support and contraceptive counseling. Every woman from the age of 21 should make an appointment with the OB/GYN as it is extremely important to return for annual pap smears and pelvic exams and also at any time when experiencing anything abnormal.
