The frigid zones surrounding the North and south poles of the earth are referred to as the Polar Regions. The Northern pole is the Arctic region which is predominantly occupied by the Arctic Ocean and a little land area. The region over the South pole is the continent of Antarctica. Both the regions receive less solar heat and as a result covered by ice caps. As a consequence of global warming, the ice reservoir is diminishing gradually. In summer, day is extremely prolonged so that the sun does not set. In winter, it is total darkness throughout. Lives in the polar region are walrus, seal, penguins, polar bear, whales and Eskimos.
