Alcohol consumed is removed from the blood by a combination of excretion, metabolism and evaporation. A small fraction is excreted through sweat, urine and breath. Breath analysis test will reveal if a person is drunk or not. Breathalyzer is the machine used to check the alcohol content in the breath especially while driving. If found negative, more reliable urine and blood tests can be done. In the case of drugs, a person should not be tested too soon or too late to detect the presence of drug in urine. The presence of drug is affected by several factors like body mass, the amount and frequency of usage, the metabolic rate of the person, age, pH of urine etc. Athletes use drugs to enhance their performance which in turn is difficult to detect through urine test. Erythropoietin, the drug which boosts the red cell counts significantly improves the performance of athletes.
